Three emerging Japanese American musicians premiere new music that re-imagines and resounds with the politics and echoes of our historic Japantowns. Mentored by legendary musicians and activists, Niall, Sara, and Shin continue a musical legacy of resistance and joy.
The performances were followed by a panel including the three performers and two of the 2021-22 mentors, Nobuko Miyamoto of Great Leap, Inc., and producer/engineer/composer Derek Nakamoto and NMRP co-facilitator Taiji Miyagawa. The panel was facilitated by Scott Oshima, who helped give birth to the Nikkei Music Reclamation Project as the director of Sustainable Little Tokyo.
